The Fishing: One Lodge, Many Different Days
The advantage of Coyhaique River Lodge is the range of water within reach of the lodge. Guests fish two per guide and typically have several solid options each day. One day might be spent floating a broad freestone river with caddis and mayfly hatches; the next might mean wading a small stream, fishing a private spring creek, or sight-casting dry flies to trout in a lake.
This is not a one-technique trip. Dry flies, dry-dropper rigs, hoppers, streamers, floating lines, and sink tips all have a place, depending on where you are fishing and the time of season. Anglers who enjoy figuring out a new piece of water each day will get a lot out of this program.

Waters You May Fish
Rio Simpson
The Simpson is a classic freestone river with strong caddis and mayfly hatches. It is often floated, with wade-fishing opportunities as well, and holds both brown and rainbow trout. It will feel familiar to anglers who enjoy the kind of varied water found on good Western trout rivers.
Rio Ñirehuao
The Ñirehuao is a mid-sized wading stream known for its summer hopper fishing and wild brown trout. This is a good place for anglers who enjoy walking, casting accurately, and fishing dry flies to good-looking water.
Rio Coyhaique
The lodge has access to the Coyhaique River close to home, including productive private water. It is a useful and consistent option when weather makes other fisheries less appealing, and it offers easy wading for brown and rainbow trout.
Rio Huemules, Emperador Guillermo & Mañihuales
These rivers add depth to the program, with everything from broad water and undercut banks to deep pools and structure that fishes well with dry flies or streamers. Some are best floated; others are better suited to a day of wading and working carefully through likely water.
Private Spring Creeks & Trout Lakes
Private access is one of the real strengths of Coyhaique River Lodge. Small spring creeks offer quiet walk-and-wade fishing for rested trout, while the area’s lakes can provide memorable sight-fishing to large cruising browns and rainbows. These are the days that make the fishing program feel distinctly Patagonian.

How You’ll Fish
Dry flies and dry-dropper rigs are productive much of the season. Bring the ability to cast a hopper or foam fly into the wind, fish a dropper under an indicator, and make a careful presentation when conditions call for it. Streamers and sinking lines become more important at certain times, especially early and late in the season.
Most fishing locations are within about 30 to 60 minutes of the lodge, though a few special waters require a longer drive. The guides can tailor the schedule toward more wading, more drift-boat fishing, or a mix of both.
Sage Experiences Demo Tackle
Coyhaique River Lodge is part of Sage Experiences, which means guests have access to premium Sage rods and reels paired with RIO fly lines selected for the local fisheries. It is a useful benefit for travelers: you can fish suitable equipment onsite, compare setups, and travel with a little less uncertainty about your tackle.

The Lodge
The lodge overlooks the Coyhaique River valley and is built for comfortable evenings after full days outside. Guests stay in private-bath suites, with a main lodge that includes a spacious dining area, lounge, bar, and wood-fired hot tub and sauna.
The atmosphere is relaxed rather than formal. Owners Gaston and Claudio Urrejola are actively involved in the operation, and the staff takes the time to learn what guests want from the week. At dinner each evening, the group talks through the following day’s plan over good food, local wine, and plenty of Patagonia conversation.
Meals feature Chilean specialties alongside familiar dishes, with local beef, lamb, fresh vegetables, and a traditional Friday asado cooked over an open fire.
A Good Patagonia Choice for Couples & Mixed Groups
This is one of the better Patagonia options when not everyone in the group wants to fish every day. Non-anglers can choose from hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, kayaking, sightseeing, cultural outings, and time in the nearby town of Coyhaique.
The range of activities gives a non-fishing partner a real Patagonia experience of their own—not simply a day spent waiting at the lodge. Anglers can fish hard while the rest of the group explores the valleys, mountains, trails, and culture of the Aysén region.
Getting There
Most guests fly into Santiago, Chile, then connect south to Balmaceda. Lodge staff meet guests at the airport for the approximately 45-minute transfer to Coyhaique River Lodge. A standard stay includes seven nights at the lodge and six full days of guided fishing or adventure activities.
Is This the Right Trip for You?
Choose Coyhaique River Lodge if you want a well-run Patagonia trip with a wide variety of trout fishing and the flexibility to fish the water that suits your interests each day. It is especially appealing for anglers who enjoy dry flies, sight-fishing, and switching between rivers, streams, and lakes over the course of a week.
If you are traveling with someone who wants a full Patagonia experience but does not need to fish every day, this is one of the more natural fits.
