➤ Choosing the Right 5-Weight Fly Rod

A 5-weight is one of the most versatile fly rod sizes available and remains a standard choice for trout anglers. The right length and action depend on where you fish and how you plan to use the rod.

  • 8'6" 5-weight: Dry flies, smaller rivers and anglers who prefer a shorter, lively rod.
  • 9' 5-weight: Our all-around choice for trout, including dries, nymphs, hopper-dropper rigs and light streamers.
  • 9'6" 5-weight: Added reach for larger rivers, mending and stillwater.
  • 10' 5-weight: A strong choice for indicator nymphing, long leaders and stillwater fishing.

Not sure which 5-weight is right for you? Our 5-Weight Fly Rod Buyer’s Guide breaks down rod length, action, fishing style and Gorge Fly Shop recommendations to help narrow the choices.
