Protecting the Lower Deschutes River

The Deschutes River is one of Oregon’s most iconic fisheries, known for its wild redband trout, summer steelhead, rugged canyon water, and deep connection to generations of anglers. For many of us at Gorge Fly Shop, the Deschutes is more than a destination. It is part of the fishing culture that shaped this region.

The Deschutes River Alliance is a nonprofit organization working to protect and improve the health of the lower Deschutes River. Their work focuses on science-based advocacy, water quality monitoring, aquatic insect research, and public awareness around the issues affecting this Wild and Scenic river.

Through monitoring stations near Warm Springs and Maupin, the DRA provides public access to real-time water quality data. They also collect information on aquatic insect hatches and use research to help advocate for colder, cleaner water and healthier habitat for fish, wildlife, and the communities connected to the river.

Why Gorge Fly Shop Supports the DRA

Healthy rivers make better fisheries. Cold, clean water supports trout, steelhead, salmon, aquatic insects, wildlife, and the outdoor traditions that depend on them. As a fly shop rooted in the Columbia River Gorge, we believe conservation is part of the responsibility that comes with fishing these waters.

We are proud to support the Deschutes River Alliance and the work they are doing for the lower Deschutes. Their focus on data, accountability, and long-term river health matters to anglers today and to future generations who deserve the chance to experience this river at its best.
