Summer has arrived in the Lower Deschutes River Canyon, which means steelhead are not far behind. Every year, thousands of fish begin making their way into the river in early July. After turning at Heritage Landing, where the Deschutes and Columbia rivers meet, they begin their climb into the Central Oregon desert.

Through riffles and flats they travel, passing rapids such as Moody, Rattlesnake, Colorado, Gordon Ridge, and Washout. It is a remarkable stretch of river filled with personality and character. Reaching this remote canyon requires hiking or biking, taking a jet boat, joining a multi-day float, or navigating the heart-pounding Kloan Road into the canyon.

We are always excited for another summer season on the Deschutes. From the simple efficiency of early-morning floating lines to the challenging sink-tip game under the high sun, this landscape and these fish deserve their world-famous reputation.
