Full Description

The Nautilus X-Series Fly Reels are built to deliver high-performance reel features without unnecessary weight. Nautilus designed the X-Series around four priorities: lightness, strength, smooth drag performance, and fast line pickup. The result is an exceptionally lightweight open-frame reel that is equally at home on freshwater rivers and lakes or in light-duty saltwater applications.

At the heart of the X-Series is Nautilus' Giga arbor, an ultra-large arbor design that retrieves more than a foot of line with each turn of the handle. The spool is also designed with grooves that allow the backing to breathe, helping it dry faster after getting wet. Despite its substantial arbor diameter, the spool remains exceptionally light, making the X-Series an excellent choice when balancing a rod without adding unnecessary weight.

The SCF-X sealed drag system combines Teflon® and carbon fiber discs for smooth, consistent drag performance. A generously sized drag knob provides excellent grip and adjustment, even with wet or cold fingers. Nautilus' precision-engineered TPX bushings are lightweight, self-lubricating, corrosion-resistant, and designed for long-term smooth operation without the weight of traditional bearings.

The open-frame design uses strong beams extending from the center of the reel to a wide line guard, providing excellent spool protection while keeping weight to a minimum. The highly ventilated arch design and dual palming rims increase spool strength while giving anglers plenty of control when palming the reel during a hard fight. The rear palming rim is built to withstand the everyday wear that comes with setting a reel down on rocks, boats, vehicles, and other hard surfaces.

XL and XL Max: One Reel Body, Two Spool Options

The XL and XL Max use the exact same 4-inch reel body. The only difference is the spool and arbor size. Both spools fit the same reel body, allowing you to switch between the XL and XL Max configurations without purchasing an entirely separate reel. In practical terms, it's like getting two reels in one.

X-Series Sizes

Four sizes cover everything from light trout fishing to larger freshwater applications and light saltwater duty. The XS and XM keep things exceptionally light for smaller rods, while the XL and XL Max provide additional capacity for larger lines and more backing.

Model Line Size Weight Backing Capacity Diameter
XS 3/4 3.8 oz. WF4 + 75 yds. 20 lb. 3.25"
XM 4/5 4.1 oz. WF5 + 110 yds. 20 lb. 3.50"
XL 6/7 4.7 oz. WF7 + 150 yds. 20 lb. 4.0"
XL Max 8/9 4.7 oz. WF8 + 175 yds. 20 lb. 4.0"
