The Scientific Anglers Sonar Stillwater Hover is a specialized stillwater fly line designed to keep your flies just beneath the surface film. Its ultra-slow 0.5 ips sink rate makes it ideal for emerger-style patterns and shallow-feeding trout when a floating line is too high and a conventional sinking line gets too deep.
Built on a long 45-foot head and overweighted by two line weights, the Sonar Stillwater Hover is designed to handle multiple flies, long leaders, and longer casts while maintaining the subtle presentation needed for calm or pressured stillwater trout.
Why We Like It:
There are times when trout are feeding just below the surface and neither a floating line nor a conventional sinking line is quite right. The Hover fills that gap. It lets you keep your flies in that narrow zone beneath the surface film, making it especially useful for chironomids, mayfly and caddis emergers, and shallow-feeding trout.

The Sonar Stillwater Hover is the slowest-sinking option in the Sonar Stillwater family. At approximately 0.5 inches per second, it is designed to hover just below the surface rather than quickly dropping through the water column.
That makes it particularly effective when trout are cruising shallow water or taking emerging insects just below the surface. Scientific Anglers also highlights its usefulness for fishing 1–3 feet of water, while its long head and additional mass help with long leaders and multi-fly rigs.
